  • This publication provides guidelines for the AE testing ofcertain specification tubes as defined by specification in AppendixA. See Appendix A for the listing of tube specifications and watervolumes.

This publication includes two methods of AE testing and, forpurposes of differentiation, the methods are addressed as method Aand method B. Method A, which is approved in the United States byDOT and in Canada by TC, consists of an AE test performed duringpneumatic pressurization to at least 110% of the normal fillpressure or marked service pressure, whichever is greater. This test is a 5-year test that replaces the water jackethydrostatic test. Method B, which is approved in Canada, consistsof an AE test performed during the hydrostatic proof pressurizationto the retest pressure of the tube. This test is a 10-year testthat replaces the 5-year hydrostatic test in the water jacket.

NOTE—Both methods A and B require additional ultrasonicverification depending on the operational criteria defined in thispublication and in Appendix A.
